RSS--Getting your content delivered to your doorstep

Yesterday's discussion touched briefly on the use of RSS.
Though produced two years ago (with some of the statistics being out of date), this video from Common Craft, does a great job of simplifying and clarifying the concept of RSS.

So here's a little assignment for you, if you've not used an RSS reader before. See the RSS emblem on the right column?

Click on it, and subscribe to this blog. Then, as we make a few additions to it, in the next week or so, they'll appear in your RSS reader.
Most current web browsers, such as Internet Explorer 7, have readers built in. However, you might want to experiment with a web-based reader. Since most of you signed up for Google accounts, you might try Google Reader. Bloglines is another very easy-to-use web-based RSS reader, which will suggest popular blogs to which you might want to subscribe upon signup.

Snappy Headlines

Today Tyson Foods' Ed Nicholson, APR and I were guest speakers for our local Northwest Arkansas PRSA chapter, we hosted 30 PR practitioners and journalists at the UofA Global Campus in Rogers, Ark. in the first “Blogger Boot Camp and Beyond”, a content-rich afternoon focused on getting started in the space and joining in the conversation of social media. While we talked about several tools such as: Twitter, Blogger, WordPress, Flickr, and YouTube we also lead an exercise on writing a blog.

Here are a few tips we offered to the class:

  • Make your opinion known
  • Link to relevant sites - YouTube, Flickr, Twitter etc.
  • Write succinct copy
  • Use snappy headlines
  • Write with passion
  • Include bullets or lists
  • Organize and edit your content
  • Make your post easy to scan
  • Be consistent with your style

As a follow up to the class I wanted to share a great post from copyblogger on 10 Sure-Fire Headline Formulas That Work http://www.copyblogger.com/10-sure-fire-headline-formulas-that-work/ What are some other tips you use to help boost your readership?
